Reo Anxiety
Project — Mini Series (search @generation reo to watch episodes on IG/Tiktok/Youtube)
Creative Direction, Art Direction, B-roll Film Director.
For Client — ATA & Generation Reo Platform
Background. The show is the first online series that explores shared experiences and stories of te reo Māori. Episodes dive into controversial, topical, relatable issues, highlighting the “why” and then most importantly, the “how”. How to overcome that barrier create social change, how to support reo speakers with confidence to progress in their reo — supported by Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Māori.
Brief & Insights. Ata have great aspirations to represent te reo Māori in a current and living way, leaning on nostalgia of kōhanga reo and kura kids mixed with current realities — gives homage to the audience whilst shaping direction on pop culture and presence. They came to me with the brief, what can we do to make a talking heads show cool? The requirement was therefore Creative Direction for the online series that amplifies talent, brings the audience into the feeling and gives them ownership over the content and supporting the client in owning their representation of culture.

Creative Direction. I created a treatment of a ‘dewy’ locked cam interview studio, and pitched to add alongside this a studio of ‘revolving sets’ of drapes, props and projections, and an additional 2 cameras in order to capture B-roll and photography to diversify the capture; giving more for the edit and promotion. The Creative Strategy provides a seamlessly diverse treatment to bring viewers close to each unique talent and experiences that together create a uniformity in story. Calm and nourishing for our interview with Cam 1, with bouts of being unapologetic with set design using equipment as prop / styling / framing and a hand held Cam 2 with treatments of handheld, and VCR edits, to bring moments of inclusivity, intimacy, connection and the chance to bring other playful elements.
